Chapter Nine

Balt

Red’s Auto Repair was out of town a bit, on the road to where we found Regina. He worked alone, so it’d be nothing for him to follow her, maybe run her off the road, or tell her he forgot something was seriously wrong with her engine. But Regina’s house, and the mango market, was in the opposite direction. So was she already dead when he took her on her last drive out toward Sutter Creek? Her bike hadn’t been found yet. Oly said he had a feeling it could be found somewhere in Red’s garage.

I told Oly to keep Red occupied while I snooped around. It’d be pretty hard to hide a Harley Sportster, even in that mess of engine parts and tools. As I snooped, I heard Red say,

“Listen, I didn’t leave this shop. If you want, subpoena my phone records.”

“We’ll just do that,” said Con.

“I changed her oil, she paid me, and you can see that I deposited her check along with others when I went to the bank at six. They’ll have video cameras showing me. I watch cop shows, too.”

He was right. A video showing him banking at six would pretty much preclude him placing any dead body down that hill by, oh, say, 6:05. That was the estimated time Regina had lain so forlornly with no pants on, strangled and bashed about the head—Con told us she had blunt force trauma to the skull. Maybe consistent with one of these tire irons or wrenches or thousands of hammers lying around.

I knew Red fairly well. I’d meet him at the Hardscrabble gate and take him to repair all kinds of tractors and backhoes. From what I knew of him, he was honest, hard-working, level-headed. If I invited him over for a beer, he’d have one. One. This was no crazed strangler. I knew it on a gut level.

Con was saying, “So if we subpoena your cell records, there won’t be a big gap between six and nine? Like, you were too busy throwing a body down a hill to check your Instagram account?”

Red frowned. “Instagram? You listen here, shit for brains. Balt there can vouch for me. I’m no lesbian murderer. I like those Cultured Pearl gals. Do a lot of work for them.”

I shrugged. “He’s right. I really don’t think he had anything to do with it.”

Red saluted me. “Thank you. Now may I get back to my carburetor?”

We started leaving the shop, but Oly stopped and turned back. “Wait. What was the last thing she said? Did she say anything about going shopping for mangoes?”

Red rolled his eyes. “No.” His expression changed then. “But wait. She did say she was going by Saul Wakeman’s bookstore. There was a book she wanted.”

Con held up Regina’s phone. “How To Bring Out Your Inner Lion?”

Red chuckled. “That sounds about right. She was always talking about animals.”

Saul Wakeman. That name kept popping up. I knew that was our next stop anyway. From the sheer joy at being able to sink my teeth into something real, I slapped Oly on the ass on our way out the door.
